Pre-finished smooth hardwood floors are sanded, stained (if applicable) and finished in the factory (typically with 3-10 coats of UV “ultra violet” finish). For a more durable pre-finished hardwood floor, choose one that is coated with an aluminum oxide or ceramic finish. An aluminum oxide finish can help minimize floor damage caused by scratching and general wear and tear.
A smooth floor is one on which the stain and finish (a clear protective coating) are applied at the factory. The finishes on these products are very tough, and more durable than those applied on the job to unfinished wood.
